140 character Reviews 2017

So, from least to most favorite, a brief synopsis of my film reviews from 2017.

Alien: Covenant
More disappointment from the franchise. No redeeming qualities in my estimation. Even the horror element is handled with crass inelegance.

Killing of a Sacred Deer
If you’re going to adapt Euripides (or any Greek tragedy), do yourself a favor and just watch Oh Brother Where Art Thou, then don’t. See the play Iphigenia in Aulis instead.

The Beguiled
File another one under unnecessary remakes. Just watch the Eastwood version, it’s much more effective and gripping.

Downsizing
When all pretense of subtlety is thrown out the window, all that you’re left with is satire, and this doesn’t qualify.

The Greatest Showman
Yawn. Baz Luhrman lite faux bio.

Get out
Despite all the furor, this is just an OK flick. Definitely not a great film, but a fairly entertaining semi-parody of self-referential social attitudes and horror films.

It Comes at Night
Is Hollywood unable to produce any truly satisfying horror films? These post apocalyptic viral infection tragedies seem trite. Sadly underwhelming.

Wind River
Pretentious  and condescending. When it comes to murder-mysteries, audiences should learn the clues along with the characters; letting the story and corresponding grief unfold organically, and the audience will form their own conclusions resulting in a much more satisfying experience.

Justice League
Has anyone involved with this production even read a DC comic? It’s unfortunate that they don’t seem to understand the characters or why audiences enjoy them, because Zack Snyder shows such visual flair.

Okja
Super pigs and a social message. Overwrought, yet still entertaining. Could have used a little more restraint, but Bong Joon-ho’s grasp on style and storytelling makes it bearable.
2 of 5

Fate of the Furious
There’s suspension of disbelief and then there’s just making shit up as you go. While this series has always been fun, this episode is a ridiculous waste of unbelievably charismatic talent! A baby? Really?! SMH
2 of 5

Jumanji
A little late to the game with this remake/reboot/reimagining. Nowhere as entertaining and heartfelt as the original or the superior Zathura.
2 of 5

Beauty and the Beast
Why remake a classic shot for shot? The money, of course; silly! Disappointing, even with Emma Watson’s performance, as it didn’t add anything new to the story. Would rather see Cocteau’s glorious version rereleased on the big screen.
2 of 5

John Wick 2
As a sequel goes, Chad Stahelski hits all the marks of the first film. Unfortunately, that’s it. No development or insight as Keanu scowls throughout, although Common almost steals the film.

Wonder
Saccharine. Heartwarming. Uplifting. These shouldn’t be detrimental adjectives; however, they seem to have been production directives instead of goals. Phoning it in all the way around does not do the source material justice here.
3 of 5

Atomic Blonde
Ms. Theron’s agent apparently believes she’s only available for uber feminist bad ass roles now (see Fate of the Furious and Fury Road). The homage to the eighties is played to a ludicrously stylish level; Charlize almost pulls it off. Almost.
3 of 5

Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri
Great ensemble acting; however, it unfortunately feels like a Coen Brothers wannabe.
3 of 5

Skull Island
In their eagerness to create a “cinematic universe” Legendary seems to be skipping a couple of steps. Creating strong and likeable characters should be a central component; and the beauty and the beast romance is a little forced. A semi entertaining romp, but only if you’re a Toho Films fan.
3 of 5

Darkest Hour
Gary Oldman creates a memorable impersonation; however, that’s about as entertaining as it goes. No real insights or compelling information.
3 of 5

Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
Frustrating, because it really should have been more enjoyable. Missed opportunities and squandered narrative. Space casinos and milking a space walrus? Shouldn’t have to ask why. The Force is better than this.
3 of 5

Coco
Pure Pixar Disney fare. Cute and pretentious? Perhaps; but also sincere and inventive. A surprisingly endearing essay on accepting age and death.
4 of 5

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Snappy, irreverent and affecting. Not bad for a sophomore effort. Fun and enjoyable while still providing a chance for the characters to grow.
4 of 5

Spider-Man Homecoming
Finally a Peter Parker that personifies the fun, wit and attitude of everyone’s favorite comic book webslinger.
4 of 5

Shape of water
Monster movie as romantic art film. Spectacular production design, although perhaps not for everyone, it’s a wonderful revisionist remake of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
4 of 5

Wonder Woman
While Patty Jenkins has a solid grasp on the character and story, this entire premise hinges on Gal Gadot’s performance and embodiment of the Amazonian. Together they take a workmanlike approach to a classic character. Fun, but perhaps a little too earnest.
4 of 5

Dunkirk
A tour-de-force of technical triumphs; unfortunately, as with most ensemble war films, the characterizations are a little thin.
4 of 5

It
Perhaps the definitive adaptation of a Stephen King book. Fresh and engaging, this works in no small part due to the talented young cast and Andy Muschietti’s inventive vision.
4 of 5

War for the Planet of the Apes
The best of the three revisionist updated Apes films. Strong characterizations and performances. A satisfying film on many levels.
4 of 5

Thor Ragnarok
An entertaining blend of humor and adventure. Taking characters out of their environment can be risky, Taika Waititi orchestrates this with aplomb. Pure comic book fun.
4 of 5

Bladerunner 2049
While HBO’s Westworld already addressed the most important aspects of this narrative, its still an unbelievably groundbreaking experience. Viewed it with an open mind and on its own merits, this film presents some truly astounding moments. With spectacular effects, unbelievable cinematography and exceptional performances, it’s a truly great piece of cinema.
4 of 5

Lego Batman
Who would’ve foreseen that the most fun and entertaining Batman would be this animated romp. Best caped crusader flick since Mask of the Phantasm. Fun, fun and more fun.
4.5 of 5

Logan
The comic book film upon which all others should be judged. It actually transcends the source material; from writing to acting to direction it is a moving and entertaining work of filmmaking. Arguably the best of the year.

So there you have unbridled thoughts on 2017’s releases. All in all, a pretty good year for flicks.
